Greening Existing Buildings - Our Greatest Opportunity
The current number of existing buildings greatly outnumbers the amount of buildings being designed and constructed at any one time, with 60-75 percent of that stock expected to still be in use in 2050. Additionally, the design and construction process only sets up the conditions for a building to potentially use less energy but usually lacks operational elements that can have significant impacts on the environment and occupants. This webinar stresses that “green building” does not end but is actually just beginning at occupancy. Learn specifically “where to begin” and the leading options in addressing the impact of building operations on energy, water and materials use while maximizing occupant comfort and health.
Learning Objectives:
- Examine the scale and impact of existing buildings on the environment, occupants and the bottom line
- Analyze the benefits of greening existing buildings through specific approaches to encourage buy-in from management in your company or organization
- Define “where to begin” in addressing opportunities that exist in one’s own building or portfolio of buildings
- Identify and distinguish which approaches are most appropriate for implementation in a particular building or portfolio of buildings
USGBC: LEED Professionals may submit their hours to Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) under the “Professional Development/Continuing Education” activity type in “My credentials” at www.gbci.org. For those who pass the quiz with a score of 80%, a certificate of completion will be emailed to you.
