Geoengineering Is Going Mainstream?

The National Academies recently gathered a group to discuss the idea, which not too long ago was seen as a fringe idea. It's now being debated in the mainstream.

The Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable was able to get everyone in the room to agree that:

  1. Climate disruption is happening fast, and we are rapidly losing any chance we might have to avert its worst effects through carbon reductions alone;
  2. Climate engineering needs a great deal more research (even making geoengineering research 1% of overall climate change research would be a vast increase), to identify both best options and techniques to avoid;
  3. Because "desperate people do desperate things" (a line from my talk), there's a very real chance that someone will attempt to use climate engineering.
